The most common questions — answered.
An ITIN opens more doors than most people realize. Banking, credit, investing, driving, college, and self-employment are all possible.
Banking & Credit- Open a bank account at Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, or Wells Fargo
- Get a credit card from Chase, Amex, or Capital One
- Build a 700+ credit score using the same FICO system
- Check your credit score for free
- Invest in the stock market through Fidelity, Schwab, or Vanguard
- Open a Roth IRA — up to $7,000/year, grows tax-free
- File U.S. tax returns and keep your ITIN active
- Claim the Child Tax Credit if your kids have an SSN
- Get a driver's license in 19 states and D.C.
- Go to college and access state financial aid (AB 540)
- Freelance, self-employ, and invoice clients legally
- Rent an apartment without an SSN
An ITIN is a tax number only — it doesn't grant work authorization or immigration status. These things need a different path.
Work & Immigration- Work a W-2 job — requires EAD, visa, or SSN. DACA recipients can work legally.
- Get a Social Security Number — requires qualifying immigration status
- Get a U.S. passport — requires citizenship, not just an ITIN
- Apply for federal student loans (FAFSA) — requires SSN. State aid may be available.
- Use Robinhood or most fintech apps — use Fidelity or Schwab instead
- Claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) — requires an SSN
You are not alone in this.
Thousands of immigrants from every country are navigating the same path — ITIN, credit, banking, DACA, college, and building a future here.
